GOD's COMMANDMENTS - NO IDOLS

Read Now

You're back!! We're SO glad that you're here!

Today we'll be learning about another of God’s commands—those are things God tells us we must do to keep us safe and healthy. Do you remember our road? Driving on a road makes us think of safety, and we’ll be learning about God’s rules that keep us safe and healthy. Each week we're going to add a street sign to our road.

Before we do that though, let's sing some songs!! These are both new so jump up and join in the words and actions!

SUNDAY SCHOOL WORSHIP

Okay so this week we are continuing our series on the 10 Commandments.. Are you ready for a new sign for our road?

This week our lesson is based on the commandment that we should only worship God, no other idols.

Today we're going to be adding this
sign to our road. (click on the image to print off)

If you'd like, you can draw a picture of a road and then click the above link to print off this weeks sign to add to it. You should then keep this road as we will be adding more signs to it over the next few weeks.

This street sign says “1” because there’s only one real God. We’ll read in the Bible about some people who made fake gods with their own hands, and we'll hear  about how Josiah made sure to get rid of anything that would help people worship fake gods and taught people that there’s only one real God.

What do you know about other religions? How do you think they got started?

In our video today, we’ll see what happens when our friend Carl gets a little confused about following only the real God.

Talk-About Video 2: Carl's Bible from DIG IN on Vimeo.

Why did Carl start writing a new Bible?
What was the problem with what Carl did?

There are people who have come up with other ideas for religions with different gods, and they’ve been able to spread those ideas better than Carl did. It’s a good thing Jacob stepped in to set Carl straight! But other religions aren’t true, because God is the only real God.

Bible Lesson

Last week we learned about God's first command. God's commands are things God tells us to do that helo us to have the best life. This week we'll learn about another one of God's commands: we should have no idols. Idols in the Bible are pretend gods. all the idols are make-believe.

Can you think of a make-believe character? They’re fun to watch on tv or in movies, but they can’t really do anything because they’re not real. There’s only one real God who made us, takes care of us, and loves us.

There’s only one real God, but the people we’ll learn about in the Bible today didn’t know that. They worshipped idols. The idols were pretend, but the people worshiped them like they were gods!

The Bible tells about a time a king named Josiah found many idols in God’s special house, the Temple. King Josiah called everyone together, and they all went up to God’s special house.

King Josiah read the Bible to the people the way we’re doing now.
As the people listened, they all learned that they hadn’t been living the best way possible. They learned they had been worshiping fake gods called idols and that there’s only one real God. King Josiah stood in front of everyone and made a promise to God to start living how God says is best. Then all the people made a promise to God too!

Next, King Josiah found all the idols in the temples.
He found idols for a fake god named Baal and Josiah destroyed them. Josiah also found idols for a fake woman god and he destroyed those too! Josiah also found idols for the sun, the moon, and the stars and he burned them. Josiah also found that people had been using horses to worship idols too, so he got rid of them.

After he was done with the idols, Josiah also fired all the leaders in God’s special house who were worshiping idols, because God is the only true God.

Josiah found all kinds of idols and statues the people had used to worship fake gods and Josiah wanted to get rid of every single thing that had to do with a fake god because he believed that there’s only one true God. Josiah had made a promise to obey and follow the one true God, so he made sure God’s special house was cared for and had no idols anywhere.

Craft

Picture
Supplies: Large paper grocery bag/brown lunch bag or a box, construction paper, markers or paint and glue or tape.

God is so amazing. When he created our world, he filled it with wonderful things. Can you name somethings that are wonderful that God made?

God made our world and filled it with things that are strong and powerful. These things show us how great God is. Some people in the Bible got mixed up and pretended those things were as great as God. So, we're going to make something to keep us from being distracted by things and to remind us how great God is.

Directions: Give each child a paper bag, or an empty box and encourage them to draw or paint a picture of something strong God made on one side and something beautiful God made on the other.

Sometimes things like toys can take away our attention when we want to worship God or pray. We can put things like that into our bags while we talk to God. Then we can remember there’s only one real God and thank him for all the amazing things he made.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you for all of the the wonderful things that you made in this world. Please help us to see that YOU are to be praised and worshiped and not the things that you have given us. Thank you for being so awesome!

Amen.
